Tutorial: How to Paint Flamingo Nails

Posted on: November 10th, 2013 by shewhodoesnails  1 Comment

So I’ve had a request to do a tutorial of how to paint my flamingo nails, and as it is really very easy, I thought I would oblige!

You will need a light blue polish, a bright pink polish, a light pink polish, a small paintbrush and a dotting tool or toothpick. And don’t forget your base coat and topcoat!

1950s Challenge: Polka dot dresses!

Posted on: May 29th, 2013 by shewhodoesnails  2 Comments

This week’s theme in the She Who Does Nail Art Challenges group is the 1950s, so I decided to paint little polka dot dress on my nails!

Can’t you just imagine when swinging and swirling around with their giant petticoats and ankle socks! SO cute.

1950s Challenge: Polka Dot Dresses

I started by painting all my nails with a base of Angelica Marshmallow which is a lovely matte pink polish – the perfect strawberry milkshake colour!

Next I painted each of the dresses on using Barry M Blood OrangeBarry M PlumNails Inc Black Taxi, and Barry M Blackberry. For this I used a tiny paintbrush and had to use two coats to get an opaque colour.

Finally, I used Barry M Matt White, my favourite white (pictured) to dot on the polka dots and paint on the waistband.

I am so excited to see what the other girls came up with in the group this week!

Lilac Twinkle

I have so many pots of glequins (chunky pieces of glitter) in my nail art helmer that I feel bad that I don’t use them enough.

True, they are a little time consuming…..but the effect they bring is so pretty, it makes it completely worth it.

So today, I have for you a lilac glequin manicure! LOOK AT IT TWINKLE!

Lilac Twinkle nails

I started by painting my nails with two coats of Angelica Bluebell from their Soft Satin Collection. I picked up this polish a few weeks ago from the Primark on Oxford Street in London for only £2.50 which is a total bargain for such a pretty shade with an almost-matte effect.

I waited until that had dried, and then focusing on one nail at a time, I painted the nail with a clear topcoat (not quick drying!) and quickly positioned all of the glequins on the nail using a toothpick dipped in a bit of clear polish. It’s actually quite quick when you get the hang of it!

This was such a beautiful manicure, I wish I had been able to keep it on for longer. It really did sparkle!

Holiday Challenge: Beach nails

I’m back again, starting a new challenge theme with the She Who Does Nail Art Challenges group! This week the theme is Holidays!

My first thought was to paint a gorgeous sandy beach shore, complete with starfish and crab! I am so chuffed with how this came out!!

Holiday Challenge: Beach nails

I started by painting my nails with a base of Models Own Bora Bora (didn’t I say that it looked like sand in my review!), and then painted on the waves area with LA Colors Sea Siren. I then gradually mixed Sea Siren with Barry M Matt White to make the edge of the sea lighter. Next I used Angelica Iced Sorbet and Barry M Block Orange to paint on the little starfish. Finally I used No7 Pillar Box to paint the crab, and Barry M Matt White and Nails Inc Black Taxi for the eyes.

I am completely in love with this nail art design. The sand is so sparkly and I just love how the sea edge turned out!

I can’t wait to see what everyone else comes up with this week!

Review: Angelica Soft Satin Matte Collection

Posted on: April 24th, 2013 by shewhodoesnails  2 Comments

Two weekends ago I spent the day at Westfields shopping centre in London with my hubby-to-be spending my birthday money on LOTS of lovely new polishes. After we had finished, Jack kindly took my shopping home and I went off into Central London for my friend’s hen party! We were supposed to meet in a restaurant just off of Oxford Street and as I arrived really early, I decided to pop into Primark to have a look around.

Just as I walked in the door, I saw a whole stand of Angelica polishes pretty much beckoning me over! Out of all the polishes I could have chosen, I actually only bought five (one whole collection) which I didn’t think was too bad as they were only £2.50 each!

Angelica Soft Satin Matte Collection

The Soft Satin Collection consists of five colours – Au Naturel, Marshmallow, Peppermint, Iced Sorbet and Bluebell. They are all soft of matte, but not quite…it’s a really nice effect! The formula for all of them is the same, nice and thin, which is a really refreshing change (bit sick of having one gloopy polish in a collection). Each of these photos shows just two coats of the polish which was lovely as it didn’t end up leaving the polish too thick on my nails.

The Au Naturel polish of the collection is a beautiful nude beige colour. It would be perfectly professional and plain enough for work, but the satin effect really gives it a nice edgy touch.

Angelica Au Naturel

Marshmallow is a lovely soft pink, actually the palest of all the pinks I own, so I was glad to add it to my collection. It makes me think of ballerinas :)

Angelica Marshmallow

Peppermint is my second favourite polish in this collection – green is my absolute favourite colour ever, especially mint greens. This colour is so smooth and subtle, perfect for the upcoming summer!

Angelica Peppermint

Iced Sorbet is my favourite polish in my collection. “ORANGE?!” I hear you gasp? I absolutely love this soft orange polish. I don’t think I have EVER seen this colour in a polish before. Most oranges are really bright and end up making my skin look really weird, but I love how this looks against my skin.

Angelica Iced Sorbet

Bluebell is definitely the brightest in the collection, a more purple than lilac colour, and is louder than I expected from the bottle. It still looks very pretty as a satin polish though, but probably is my least favourite in the collection.

Angelica Bluebell

You can buy Angelica polishes from big Primark stores for just £2.50 each or from the Angelica website for £2.75!

I actually didn’t realize that they have as many polishes available as they do until I saw the website! There are now so many more that I have my eye on! I love the look of the Two Tones or the Foil Metallics!

I have been shopping!

As it was my birthday last week and some very kind people gave me some money as gifts, I decided to drag Jack to Westfields London on Saturday. I think I went a little over the top. I bought 29 nail polishes. No, I’m not joking.

We started by popping into Boots where I immediately saw a huge stand full of Sinful Colors polishes. I don’t own any of those, so as Boots had a 3 for 2 offer on, I managed to nab these three for only £3.98! The colours I got were Tokyo Pearl, Exotic Green and Cinderella.

Next we stumbled across Beauty Bay which I knew was a place I could get LA Colors polishes for only 99p each! At one point I had 15 polishes in my basket, but I managed to cut it down to just 11.

These three colours are Palm Tree, Illusion and Fun In The Sun.

The next three colours are Sea Siren, Metallic Blue and Blue Lagoon.

These four polishes are Gold Nugget, Coral Reef, Shocker and Blossom.

This polish was slightly more expensive at £1.99 and is called Crowd Surfing.

Next I managed to find a Superdrug which is one of my usual go-to polish shops so I popped in to see if they had anything that my local one doesn’t, and it did! Tucked away on one shelf I found a few Invogue polishes! I’ve seen so many posts about these recently so I HAD to get some to try them. I bought two from the Matt Suede Effect Series – Emerald Dust and Sophisticated.

The one shop I had been desperate to go to was the Models Own Bottleshop. It’s so cool to be able to get polishes there before they come out in the shops! I immediately decided that I need to have the new Bora Bora – anything gold a sparkly is a sure fire winner in my opinion!

[frame align="center"]Models Own Bora Bora[/frame]

They also had an offer on in the Models Own Bottleshop – 6 polishes for £20! I have been waiting to get the Champagne collection and the Kaleidoscope collection for some time now and as I thought it was a little over the top to get both sets, I ended up going for the Champagne collection. I must say though, I was very impressed with the girls working in the Bottleshop – they were so happy to help and running all over the place to find things and suggest things to me!

[frame align="center"]Models Own Champagne Collection[/frame]

The last shop we visited in Westfields shopping centre was Kiko. This place confused me as last time we went there I paid only £1.50 per nail polish, but this time this polish cost me nearly £5! I don’t get it. That’s quite a huge markup. That’s why I only bought one, instead of the six I bought last time. This polish is Kiko 423.

[frame align="center"]Kiko 423[/frame]

After we had finished shopping, I gave all my bags to my wonderful other half to take home (isn’t he amazing!) and I went off to Oxford Street for my friend’s hen do. As I was a bit early arriving, I popped into Primark and was met by a big stand of Angelica polishes priced at £2.50 each. Naturally, I bought the whole collection of Soft Satin Matt Effect polishes!

[frame align="center"]Angelica[/frame]

Such a mad day – I really cannot wait to try all these polishes on over the next few weeks!

Have you bought any new polishes recently?
