Reptile Challenge: Snake Skin

Posted on: May 20th, 2013 by shewhodoesnails  2 Comments

It’s Monday again! That means that it’s time for a new theme in the She Who Does Nail Art Challenges group. This week, the theme is reptiles!

I’m sure I’m going with the crowd a bit this week, and I know it’s not very original but I’ve never done a snake skin design before and I’ve wanted to use this stamping pattern for AGES.

I bought the polish pictured – NYC Magic Earth – from Superdrug this week, along with the other polishes from the NYC Foil Explosion collection and I’m so impressed at their stamp-ability (yes that’s a word), especially for only £1.99 each!

Reptile Challenge - Snake skin nails

I started by painting my nails with Essie Navigate Her and after that had dried, I used NYC Magic Earth and Bundle Monster Plate BM-215 to stamp over the snake pattern.

I love the subtle effect so much! The shine really captures the scales I was going for :)

Can’t wait to see what the other girls come up with!

Cocktail Challenge: Mint Mojito

Posted on: May 17th, 2013 by shewhodoesnails  1 Comment

The theme on the She Who Does Nail Art Challenges group this week is Cocktail Nails!

I have had literally no inspiration this week whatsoever, but I do really want to get back into stamping as I haven’t done much in ages, so I had a rummage through my collection of stamping plates and found three images I liked – a shattered effect, a leafy pattern and a cocktail glass! Perfect for a mint mojito! One of my favourite cocktails EVER!

Cocktail Challenge - Mint Mojito Nails

I started by painting my index and middle fingers with Barry M Matt White, my ring finger with Topshop Easy Breezy and my little finger with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Emerald Express.

After they had dried completely, I used Barry M Foil Effect Silver to stamp the shattered effect over my ring finger and middle finger to look a bit like ice, and a cocktail glass on my little finger! I then used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Emerald Express to stamp the leaf pattern on my ring finger and the tip of my middle finger. That was so hard to try and get full leaves!

Finally I used a bit of Topshop Easy Breezy to paint in the leaves on my middle finger!

I think I could have done my middle finger a little cleaner, but I am so pleased with the rest of my nails – especially my index finger, I love the white and silver together!

Check out what the other girls in the group have come up with below!

Indigo Flames

Purple mani!! It feels so long since I’ve done a purple mani, which is weird as purple is one of my favourite colours and I have a LOT of purple polishes!

I did these nails while on my lunch break at work. I’ve taken to planning my manicure in the morning and packing a nail kit with all the things I will need and then bringing it to work to do at lunch time! It’s been so great at getting me away from my PC for an hour.

I started by painting a base of Beauty UK Smokey Lilac on three nails, and Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri Grape Escape on my ring finger. I then painted a quick drying topcoat over the lilac nails to make them dry quickly so I could stamp over them without smudging! I used Models Own Boogie Nights to paint over my ring finger – such an amazing glitter! Finally, I used Sally Hansen Grape Escape again and a Bundle Monster stamping plate to stamp that gorgeous flame-like pattern onto my nails.

I love that Models Own glitter so much. I have the whole Mirrorball collection and really feel like I should use them more often!

Hope you’re all having a great Monday!

Day 13 of the 30 Day Challenge: Animal print nails

Posted on: September 13th, 2012 by shewhodoesnails  1 Comment

This theme was always going to be a issue due to the number of different animal print stamping patterns I have. I’ve already done tiger print so I wasn’t going to do that, but I still had quite a few to choose from. In the end, I chose leopard print and Im so glad I did!

I started by painting my nails with Barry M Foil Effects Gold and then used Konad Special Polish in Black and Bundle Monster stamping plate 221 to stamp the leopard print pattern over the top.

I took my photos and I really liked it, but then I had an idea…I decided to use LA Colours Bronze Bombshell to colour in the spots. To be honest I can’t really decide which style I like better so I thought I would share both sets of photos with you. Which do you prefer?

Don’t forget to enter the GIVEAWAY I have running at the moment to win a bottle of Barry M Foil Effects Silver!

Day 7 of the 30 Day Challenge: Black and white nails

Posted on: September 7th, 2012 by shewhodoesnails  13 Comments

I’m back again with today’s installment of the 30 Day Challenge and today’s theme is ‘black and white nails’.

These two plain colours (or absences of colour) tend to be a popular nail polish combination for me. I love the classy smart effect you can get with them and often trade the white in for a silver.

Today however, I decided to go with something a bit more fun!

Piano nails! How cute are these? I think this was probably the easiest stamping experience I’ve had so far (not that it’s hard!) and was a real joy to do.

I started by painting my nails with Barry M Matt White and after it had dried, I used Bundle Monster Plate 207 and Konad Special Polish in Black to stamp the piano pattern over it.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the others doing this challenge can offer today as I might have to pinch some black and white ideas!

Gothic nails for a rocking wedding

Posted on: August 28th, 2012 by shewhodoesnails  2 Comments

Yesterday was the wedding of two of my friends and as they are very much the rocker type, they decided to theme their wedding around rock music and attire. Queue stress about outfits and makeup.

In the end I chose a lovely dress from Next that was a dark purple, green and grey floral patterned floaty number that was short at the front and long at the back. With it I put black tights and my ‘Spice Girl’ black platform heels. Makeup-wise I went for dark metallic eyes and simple lips, and was actually very pleased with the final effect (which makes a change).

The nails however were an entirely different story. On Sunday night I must have tried about five different ideas that I just hated, but upon waking Monday morning I had another idea. I realised that I hadn’t used my Maybelline Cosmic Flash in a really long time and thought I would look really great over a black. While I was rooting through my polish box, I came upon my Rimmel Pro Matte Topcoat and thought the matte effect would make it look even more edgy!

So I painted my nails and then found a skull stamping image on one of my Bundle Monster plates an thought it would look good accented in silver. I put Barry M Foil Effects Silver onto the plate, scraped the excess off and stamped the stamper onto it. Unfortunately that was the last bit that went well. When stamping the image onto my nail I discovered that even though my nails might look dry and feel dry, they definitely were NOT DRY.

So a smudged nail later, I then had to repaint a nail and wait FOREVER to make sure it had dried properly before attempting stamping again. Second time lucky, it stamped ok. It could have been better as it missed out the skull’s teeth, but you can’t really tell I don’t think.

It was so weird not doing a topcoat on top of the stamped image, and while I was having my shower before getting dressed I was paranoid that the design would come off and kept checking my nails every thirty seconds. It survived fine though, and I’m actually quite reluctant to take it off today :(

Tiger Time!

Posted on: August 24th, 2012 by shewhodoesnails  No Comments

When I first got my Bundle Monster stamping plates, I knew this was a manicure that I had to try. Big cats are my favourite animals (stay tuned for the leopard print) and the thought of sporting a cat-coat on my nails was definitely appealing.

The Barry M Block Orange was really lovely to work with. I am a huge fan of Barry M polishes (if you don’t already know) and this polish only took two coats to become opaque. LOVE IT. Not sure the colour suits my complexion too much, but I love it too much to care.

As usual, the Konad special polish worked really well while stamping. I was a little impatient waiting for it to dry before putting the top coat on so I got some annoying smear-age, but I still like the final effect.

The only way I think I could have made this manicure a little more me would have been to put a glittery coat on the top, as I did feel that it lacked something sparkly.

I’m totally getting the hang of this stamping thing now which according to my recently viewed items on Amazon, is a bad thing. My poor purse is going to have meltdown.

Second attempt at stamping!

Posted on: August 20th, 2012 by shewhodoesnails  8 Comments

I am obsessed. I can’t help it. I just can’t. Stamping has taken my nails to a whole new level of pretty.

The night before last I couldn’t decide what pattern to stamp on my nails, so I gave my boyfriend the choice. What a great choice he made! This really detailed pattern on Bundle Monster plate 201 is absolutely gorgeous, almost displaying a stained glass window sort of effect.

The next problem seemed to be choosing the colours. I knew that I was off to a BBQ yesterday and that I wanted to wear my black and white polka dot dress (LOVE IT) so I thought black and white would be a good idea. But as I reached for the polishes, the super duper shiny Barry M Instant Nail Effect Silver Foil caught by eye, and I knew that I had to use it.

Proving once again that I am impossibly indecisive, I could choose whether to paint a black background and stamp with silver, or paint a silver background and stamp with black. So I did both. I also wanted to try doing an ‘accent nail’ too, so I thought I’d throw that in the bundle.

The final outcome was very pleasing indeed.

This week I bought some Bundle Monster stamping plates and could not wait to try them out! So last night I sat down and had a good go.

What do you think of that snazzy slider?! Pretty cool huh. You can click on the images in it to see bigger versions, same for the images below :)

I started out by trying all sorts of different patterns and colours, and finally settled on this one for my first nail art blog post. Not bad for a first attempt I think!
